Asperger, Asburger ?

What is this condition? Well our team member Ms. Ema has kindly prepared this brief piece to enlighten us about this term means.

Asperger’s Disorder:

Asperger’s Disorder or Syndrome is an expression for a distinct type of an ubiquitous disorder which is set apart by difficulties in development of social skills and behavior. Prior to this, many children with Asperger’s syndrome were determined as having autism, another branch of the pervasive developmental disorders, or other disorders. Although autism and Asperger’s have indisputable similarities, there are also important differences.

Due to this basis, children presumed of having these conditions are in need of careful examination. Generally, a child with Asperger’s syndrome have normal intelligence. While most children suffering from autism fail to develop language or have language delays, children with Asperger’s disorder are usually using words by the age of two, although it is observed that their speech patterns are somewhat peculiar.

Most children suffering from Asperger’s syndrome have problems in interacting with their peer. They usually become loners and may demonstrate aberrant behaviors. A child with Asperger’s, for example, may spend hours each day preoccupied with counting cars passing on the street or watching only the weather channel on television. Coordination difficulties are also frequent with this disorder. These children often have special educational needs.
Although it is not determined the cause of Asperger’s Syndrome, current research suggests hereditary factors to be the main idea on how this disorder arises. Children with Asperger’s Syndrome are also at risk for other psychiatric problems such as depression, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There are child and adolescent psychiatrists which acquire the training and expertise to appraise pervasive developmental disorders like autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Working with families to outline befitting and efficacious treatment programs. Presently, the most effective treatment involves combination of psychotherapy, special education, behavior modification, and support for families. Some children with Asperger’s Syndrome will also gain from medication given.
The result for children with Asperger’s Syndrome is by and large more propitious than for those with autism. Due to their higher level of intellectual functioning, many of these children successfully finish high school and attend college. Although they face problems with social interaction and awareness linger, they are able to develop lasting relationships with family and friends.
